. I define the expressive arts as the use of art, music, dance, drama, or writing as a means for revealing and expressive one's inner life of emotions, dreams and desires.
Those of us working in the field of expressive arts therapy work in an interdisciplinary way. It has been demonstrated that, when the arts are used in combination or alternating between one and another, they become a powerful vehicle for experiencing, identifying, and communicating one's true feelings. In expressive arts, there is absolutely NO expectation to make art for the sake of art. It is the process that matters the most.
In expressive arts, as long as your creation captures what your soul needs to express, the work has served its purpose. In order for feelings to speak, the process must be safe and free of judgement and outside standards of aesthetics, technique or style. This is soul art.
